| I have traced my DANIEL line to the
small isolated village of Imber, on Salisbury Plain in
Wiltshire, where the family are recorded from 1672 to
1943 (when Imber was closed). The earliest records have
the family name as DANIELL or DANIEL. Later, especially
after 1850, DANIELS and DANIELLS became more common,
although spelling often seems arbitrary. My ancestors in
Imber were originally tailors, later agricultural
labourers. Two of my DANIEL ancestors were parish clerks
of St Giles Church, Imber. One branch of the DANIEL
family of Imber is known to have emigrated to North
Ogden, Weber, Utah, USA in the early 1870s. Imber has become a "ghost town," having been suddenly and permanently evacuated by the military in 1943. The village is now in the middle of a major artillery range and is closed to the public for most of the year. The village has an open day once a year in September, and the roads are open on certain other days. Most of the original buildings have disappeared or are in ruins, although the church is out of bounds to military operations and remains relatively unscathed. Because Imber was such an isolated community, there is an exceptional degree of inter-marriage among the families of the village. Some related Imber families: BARTLETT, BLAKE, BRAY, CARTER, COLLINS, CRUSE, DEAN, GIBBS, GODDARD, HAWKINS, MAISH / MARSH, MATTHEWS, MEADEN, MUNDAY, PEARCE, PEPLAR, POTTER, SCAMMELL, TINNAMS, TUCKER, WYATT Other related Wiltshire families: BLANCHARD (Bulford), COCKRELL (Chitterne), ORAM (Erlestoke), SMITH (Sutton Veny), WHEELER (Erlestoke, East Coulston) Browsable Family Tree
